You’ve finished reading and annotating the book. It’s time to begin planning for student success.<\/p>\n

First things first. \u00a0Pull out the school calendar and a blank calendar. \u00a0Why pull out the calendar? \u00a0Everything that we do needs to be purposeful. \u00a0Purpose is more than just identifying standards and creating a rigorous course of study, it is about being good stewards of time<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

There is a delicate balance that needs to be struck between the right amount of time to spend on a unit of study<\/strong> and the amount of time available to teach all standards<\/strong>\u00a0during the school year.<\/p>\n

\"ChartingSo, get out a calendar and chart your course.<\/strong>\u00a0 Here are some guiding questions:<\/p>\n

  1. How many weeks are in the current quarter or semester?<\/li>\n
  2. How long is the book?<\/li>\n
  3. Will your students be reading this book in class and at home?<\/li>\n
  4. How long do you want this book study to last?<\/li>\n
  5. How many chapters need to be read in order to finish in the allotted time?<\/li>\n
  6. How many major concepts will be covered? Minor concepts?<\/li>\n
  7. How many new concepts will be introduced? \u00a0How many concepts will be reviewed?<\/li>\n
  8. Will your students be engaging in discussion of a movie adaptation of the novel? \u00a0After which chapters will movie clips be shown?<\/li>\n
  9. How many days will be needed for any final presentations, paper revisions, teacher and peer conferences, or tests?<\/li>\n
  10. When will you pass out rubrics for assignments related to the novel?<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n

    A nicely plotted novel unit of study is a beautiful thing. \u00a0Now, the real fun can begin!<\/p>\n
